If you’re dreaming of a cowboy engagement session that perfectly captures your western lifestyle, Cody and Breck’s Texas engagement shoot is sure to inspire you. Set against the wide-open landscapes of Texas, their session featured everything that makes country love stories so special—sunset skies, loyal animals, and an undeniable bond between two people who share a love for the western way of life.

A true Cowboy Engagement
Cody and Breck chose a breathtaking location that showcased the beauty of Texas. With rolling fields, golden-hour light, and a peaceful country backdrop, it was the ideal place to capture their love story. Texas engagement photography is all about authenticity, and this setting delivered just that. Whether you’re planning a rustic ranch session or something more adventurous, choosing a location that reflects your lifestyle makes all the difference in telling your story through photos and I can help you with location options if you need!

One thing you will notice I prioritize when you decide to include horses in your session, getting your horses ears forward. Of course there will be some moments and photos that are a little more in the moment, but I have so many tricks up my sleeve from my years of photographing couples with their horses to make sure they have their ears forward. I have horses myself, and know that we love the way they look in photos so much more when they don’t look like donkeys. No shade to donkeys, I have a couple of those too, we just don’t want our horses looking like them in our engagement photos. Yes, there is usually a blooper or two because, well horses have minds of their own and sometimes like to be silly, got to capture their personality too sometimes.

One of the sweetest parts of Cody and Breck’s engagement session was the inclusion of their beloved animals. Their two horses stood gracefully in the background, adding a timeless western feel to their portraits. Their horses were an important part of their love story and made the photos feel even more personal. Their blue heeler pup, Tex, also made an appearance, showing off his playful personality and unwavering loyalty. Dogs always bring an extra layer of warmth to engagement sessions, and Tex was no exception—running through the fields and standing proudly beside his humans.

Dressing for your western engagement session is all about embracing the cowboy lifestyle, and Cody and Breck did just that. Cody wore his classic cowboy hat, boots, and a button-up shirt, while Breck looked stunning in her sleek long-sleeved shirt and boots, effortlessly blending western charm with elegance. Their outfits not only complemented the rustic scenery but also reflected their personalities and shared lifestyle. If you’re planning a cowboy engagement session, neutral and earthy tones always photograph beautifully against the natural Texas landscape. And of course for an engagement session, you can embrace being a bride and go for white or cream.

Golden hour is the best time for engagement photography, and Cody and Breck’s session proved exactly why. As the sun set over the Texas fields, the warm, golden light wrapped around them, creating a soft and romantic atmosphere. There’s something magical about cowboy engagement sessions at sunset—the way the light hits the brim of a cowboy hat, the soft glow around a couple standing hand in hand, and the endless sky stretching above them. These are the moments that make cowboy engagement photography so special.

Incorporating horses and dogs into engagement sessions adds a meaningful touch, especially for couples with a deep connection to their animals. Not only do they symbolize the lifestyle you live, but they also bring a sense of comfort and familiarity to the session. If you’re thinking about including your animals, consider how they interact with you naturally and choose a setting where they’ll feel at ease. This way, your engagement photos will feel even more like home. Of course, we will also take some time for just the two of you during your session too.

This was actually the second engagement session Cody and Breck did with me. Their first one was right after they got engaged and then we did this one a few months later when it was a little warmer. It was so fun to get to connect with them several times before their wedding day and it really got them so comfortable in front of the camera, but also gave the two totally different looks for their engagement photos and they really got to cherish this season of life together.

If you love the idea of a cowboy engagement session in Texas, finding the right photographer is key. Look for someone who understands western culture, knows how to work with animals, and can capture the natural beauty of your love story. Engagement sessions should feel effortless and fun, allowing you to celebrate this special season of your life in a way that feels true to who you are.

Of course we had to let Tex join in for a few more photos before we closed our time together. I think we all know he was the real star of the show. He was such a good boy and so proud to be a part of their love story.

Cody and Breck’s session was the perfect blend of romance, western tradition, and Texas charm. Whether you’re planning a cowboy engagement session with horses, dogs, or just the two of you, let their love story be an inspiration for your own unforgettable photoshoot. I would love to help tell your story in a way that feels true to who the two of you are and I document your love in a way that feels authentic, true to who you are as a couple, and in a way that won’t feel forced. Think of it like a date night but with the best third wheel there to capture and document it all. This is the beginning of your legacy, you deserve to have photos that you can look back on for years to come and remember the way you felt in this season of life. The Turquoise Lens
